In this episode, GRAAHI facilitated this candid conversation to discuss the partnership between “Humanity and Science” in an effort to bring awareness to the Opioid Overdose Epidemic. We were joined by two esteemed guests in Grand Rapids: Rachel Jantz, MPH, is an epidemiologist with 10 years experience in public health who brings a wealth of knowledge surrounding opioids and how they affect Kent County. Ellen Atkins, LPN, who serves as a dedicated health educated based in Grand Rapids with over 30 years of nursing experience.

With over 30 years with the Kent District Court as the Court Administer and City’s first District Court Magistrate she has a long standing background in community work. As a community connector and an advocate for the under-served, Deborah dives into the importance of protecting yourself from heart disease. She also serves as the lead coordinator for GRAAHI’s Restoring Health Program, designed to get seniors active and connected.

Samuel is trained as a multicultural therapist, engaging in both family systems and cognitive behavioral therapies. For clients dealing with severe traumas and fear based illnesses he uses accelerated resolution therapy and was trained by Laney Rozenweig based programs. Serving at West Michigan’s 1st drop-in center, he brings years of experience working with homeless youth and their families. His work spreads to now working with nonprofits, churches, youth-serving organizations and state agencies. As an entrepreneur by heart and founder of the Wisdom Center Counseling Services, he also supports budding black businesses with consulting and resource support.
