Pathways to Healthcare Careers (PHC) Opens Access to Equity in the Healthcare Workforce

As the nation’s population continues to diversify, the need for a more diverse workforce is more pressing than ever. Understanding African Americans suffer from a higher incidence of diabetes, increased prevalence of hypertension, and more deaths from coronary heart disease and stroke than their white counterparts, it is widely recognized that part of the solution is diversification of the healthcare workforce. Not only does a diverse healthcare workforce improve access and quality of care, current literature suggests a diversified workforce also increases innovation and productivity.

PHC is the educational and career-readiness extension of GRAAHI that seeks to provide access, community, and equity to historically underrepresented populations in the healthcare industry. Through a variety of programs, resources, and events, PHC introduces early learners, high school students, and adult learners to the diverse entry points and opportunities for academic programs within the health and medical industry and supports their entry into the workforce within the Grand Rapids, MI area and beyond.

Access

We believe access leads to equality. By exposing and introducing a variety of healthcare careers to underrepresented populations in the healthcare industry through our programming, we support the normalization of different careers and jobs for all people to serve in the healthcare industry.

COMMUNITY

Every person needs to feel connected and a sense of belonging when they join the professional space. Historically, underrepresented communities have been pushed to the fringes of a professional affiliation (Collins, 1989), and by GRAAHI creating opportunities for healthcare professionals to share space through our programs and events, we support individuals and organizations in cultivating unity and community.

Equity

We recognize that while tools are available to connect any aspirant to the healthcare industry, resources are not equally distributed in historically underrepresented communities. Through our programs and community partnerships, GRAAHI brings tools and resources to the underserved to support equitable representation within the healthcare industry in the Greater Grand Rapids area and beyond.
